🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your Sierra 1500’s engine and helps it breathe properly. On your truck, the filter sits inside the large black air box in the engine bay and is designed to be a quick maintenance item.

- 🧯 Keep fingers/tools clear of the cooling fan and belts.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes if it was running.
- 🔦 Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the air box (large black box connected to the intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air box and filter cover
- Find the air box on your Sierra 1500 (black plastic box on the intake tube path).
- Use a flashlight to spot the metal retaining clips around the air box lid.
Step 2: Loosen the intake tube clamp (if it blocks the lid)
- Some setups let the lid open without loosening anything; others need a little slack.
- If the intake tube is tight, use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen the hose clamp at the air box.
- Only loosen—do not remove the clamp.
Step 3: Unclip the air box lid
- Flip open the metal clips by hand.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a flat trim tool (a trim tool is a flat plastic pry tool that helps you lift clips without breaking parts).
Step 4: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the lid completely).
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt inside the lower air box.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the filter’s sealing edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded or pinched).
Step 6: Close the air box and secure everything
- Close the lid carefully so it doesn’t shift the filter out of its seat.
- Snap all the metal clips back on by hand.
- If you loosened the intake tube clamp, use the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to snug it back down firmly.
âś… After Repair
- 🔍 Double-check all clips are fully latched and the lid is sitting evenly.
- 🚗 Start the engine and listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
- 🧼 If you hear a noise, shut off the engine and re-check the filter seating and clips.
