🔧 Grand Cherokee - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your air filter keeps dust and debris out of your engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the turbo and engine from dirt.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool for 15 minutes.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the air box or intake tube.
- ⚠️ Don’t tug on wiring near the intake; sensors are fragile.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and make sure the hood is securely supported.
- Have a shop towel ready so you can cover the intake opening if needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- The air filter sits inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay (the box connected to the large intake tube).
- Put on work gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2: Loosen the intake tube (if it blocks the lid)
- Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp at the air box outlet (worm-gear style clamp).
- If there’s a small bracket holding the tube, remove it using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension.
- Tip: Just loosen enough to move the tube.
Step 3: Unclip or unfasten the air box lid
- Release the metal/plastic retaining clips around the air box lid by hand.
- If your lid uses fasteners instead of clips, remove them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Lift the lid up slightly. Don’t yank it—some hoses/wires may limit how far it moves.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the filter straight out.
- Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt inside the air box.
- Do not let debris fall into the intake opening; cover it with the shop towel if needed.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box tray.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seated in the groove all the way around.
- Tip: If the lid won’t close, the filter isn’t seated.
Step 6: Reinstall and secure the air box lid
- Lower the lid into position.
- Snap the retaining clips back on by hand, or tighten any fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
Step 7: Re-secure the intake tube
- Slide the intake tube fully back onto the air box outlet.
- Tighten the clamp using an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver until snug.
- Reinstall any bracket bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for hissing/whistling (a sign the intake tube or lid isn’t sealed).
- Recheck that the air box clips are fully latched and the clamp is tight.
