🔧 Corolla - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Corolla’s engine air filter sits in the air box and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, which helps performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fan area (it can start unexpectedly if the key is on).
  • ⚠️ Do not drive with the air box left unclipped or open (it can pull in unfiltered air).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔎 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • 🔎 Open the hood and let the engine cool for a few minutes if it was recently running.
  • 🔎 Have your flashlight ready so you can clearly see the air box clips and filter seating edge.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use your flashlight to find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it’s connected to the large intake tube).
  • The air box is the filter “housing.”

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips holding the air box lid (flip them off by hand).
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle the clip gently rather than forcing it.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove hoses).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the air box sealing surface.
  • Don’t let dirt fall into the intake opening.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Insert the new engine air filter into the air box.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the edges of the box (no corner folded or pinched).
  • Check that the rubber edge (if equipped) is evenly seated all the way around.

Step 5: Close and re-clip the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into position.
  • Re-engage each metal clip by hand until it snaps into place.
  • Use your flashlight to confirm the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • ✅ Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (could mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • ✅ Recheck the clips and air box lid alignment if anything sounds unusual.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $12-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $38-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
