🔧 Explorer - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Explorer’s engine air filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain good airflow, performance, and fuel economy.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan and belts (they can start unexpectedly if the engine is hot and a fan cycles).
- ⚠️ Don’t run the engine with the filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flathead screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Small flashlight
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the engine off and let it cool for 15 minutes if it was running.
- Open the hood and use a small flashlight to locate the air filter box (typically a black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a small flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box on the intake tubing (the large plastic tube going toward the engine).
- The air box is the “container” that holds the filter.
Step 2: Release the air box fasteners
- Look for metal clips around the edge of the air box lid.
- Flip the clips open by hand. If they’re tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- If your air box uses screws instead of clips, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
Step 3: Open the air box
- Lift the lid straight up.
- If the lid doesn’t lift easily, check for a hidden clip/screw you missed.
- Don’t yank—plastic tabs can break.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out of the air box.
- Use a small flashlight to check how it sits (so the new one goes in the same way).
Step 5: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dirt/leaves inside the lower air box.
- Wipe the rim where the filter seals.
- Do not push dirt into the intake tube.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the air box the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully into the groove all the way around.
- A pinched filter can let dust past.
Step 7: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid into place, making sure it’s aligned and seated evenly.
- Snap the clips closed by hand, or tighten screws with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug.
- Snug only—over-tightening can crack plastic.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling or hissing (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- Re-check that all clips/screws are secure and the lid is seated evenly.
