🔧 Express 3500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing your A4’s engine air filter keeps airflow clean and steady, which helps performance and fuel economy. On your Express 3500, the filter sits inside the plastic air box in the engine bay and is a quick service item.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
Assumption: Stock factory air box (no aftermarket intake).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot components.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the engine fan and belts.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was running.
- Have a shop towel ready so no dirt falls into the intake.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box on the engine bay.
- It’s connected to the engine by a big plastic/rubber intake tube.
Step 2: Open the air box
- If your air box uses metal clips, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver (gently pry).
- If your air box uses screws/bolts, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Don’t force it—tabs can crack.
Step 3: Lift the air box lid
- Carefully lift the top half of the air box by hand.
- If the intake tube clamp prevents movement, loosen the clamp with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet just enough to lift the lid.
- You usually don’t need to fully remove the tube.
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the air box (do not push dirt into the intake opening).
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it sits fully down and the rubber edge (seal) is even all the way around.
- A crooked seal can let dirt past.
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid back into place by hand.
- Re-secure the clips by hand (or with a flathead screwdriver if needed).
- If you loosened the intake clamp, snug it with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
Step 7: Final under-hood check
- Use a flashlight to confirm nothing is left in the engine bay (tools, towel).
- Confirm the air box lid is fully closed on all sides.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for a whistling/hissing sound (can mean the air box isn’t sealed or the intake clamp is loose).
- If the check engine light comes on, re-check that the air box is fully closed and the intake tube is snug.
