šŸ”§ Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Highlander’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and can smooth out throttle response if the old filter is clogged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can start unexpectedly on some vehicles.
  • āš ļø Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to locate the black plastic air box connected to the large intake tube (the tube that goes toward the engine).
  • On your Highlander, it’s in the engine bay near the front/side and has metal retaining clips around the lid.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use your hands (and the flashlight as needed) to flip open the metal clips holding the air box lid down.
  • If a small hose clamp or screw-style fastener prevents the lid from lifting, loosen it with a Phillips screwdriver just enough to free the lid.
  • Tip: Don’t force it—check for a missed clip.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and use a flashlight to check the air box for leaves/dirt.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Slide the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edge (no corners folded).
  • Tip: A crooked filter can let dirt bypass it.

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the lid back into place so the edges line up.
  • Snap all retaining clips closed by hand.
  • If you loosened any fastener, snug it with a Phillips screwdriver (do not overtighten).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for air leaks (a loud hissing or honking sound can mean the lid isn’t seated).
  • Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the intake tube connection looks secure.
  • If a check engine light appears afterward, re-open the air box and confirm everything is sealed and connected.
