🔧 Yukon - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Yukon's engine air filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) and traps dust before it reaches the engine. Replacing it helps airflow, fuel economy, and keeps the mass air flow sensor and throttle body cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Let the engine cool so you don’t touch hot parts.
  • 🛑 Keep tools and fingers away from the cooling fan area.
  • 🛑 Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and use a small flashlight to locate the air filter box on the passenger side front of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a small flashlight to find the large black plastic air box connected to the intake tube.
  • You’ll see either metal latches (clips) or a few screws around the air box lid, depending on the exact housing style.

Step 2: Unlatch or unscrew the air box lid

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • If your Yukon has metal latches: use the flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently pop each latch open.
  • If your Yukon has screws: use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen/remove the screws around the lid.
  • Don’t pry hard—plastic cracks easily.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Use your nitrile gloves to lift the air box lid just enough to pull the filter out.
  • Pull the old filter straight up and out.
  • Use the small flashlight to check for leaves/dirt inside the lower air box.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use the small flashlight to look around the rim where the filter seals.
  • If you see loose debris, carefully wipe it away using your nitrile gloves (avoid pushing dirt deeper into the intake).

Step 5: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Use your small flashlight to confirm the new filter matches the old one in shape and height.
  • Set the new filter into the lower air box using your nitrile gloves.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully in its groove all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the lid using your nitrile gloves and ensure it lines up evenly.
  • If your Yukon has latches: close each latch by hand; use the flathead screwdriver only if needed to help seat it gently.
  • If your Yukon has screws: tighten them evenly using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug (do not overtighten).

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • 🧪 If the check engine light comes on, re-check that the air box lid is fully closed and no intake duct was disturbed.
  • 🧪 Recheck the latches/screws after a short drive to confirm everything stays tight.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
