🔧 Suburban - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Changing the engine air filter keeps clean air flowing into your engine and helps fuel economy and throttle response. On your Suburban, the filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) under the hood and is quick to access.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • Don’t drop dirt or leaves into the intake tube or air box.
  • Avoid touching or bumping the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow sensor); it measures incoming air and is delicate.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Vacuum with hose attachment

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Pop the hood and use the hood prop rod to secure it.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 10 minutes if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box connected to the intake tube near the front of the engine bay (typically passenger-side front).

Step 2: Unlatch/open the air box

  • Release the metal retaining clips by hand; if a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually do not need to remove the intake tube).

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out and set it aside.
  • Keep the air box opening facing up.

Step 4: Clean the air box (quickly)

  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust.
  • Use a vacuum with hose attachment to remove leaves/sand from the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not vacuum or wipe inside the intake tube where the MAF sensor is located.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and the sealing edge is fully seated all the way around.

Step 6: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the lid back into position.
  • Re-engage all clips by hand (use the flathead screwdriver only if needed).
  • Give the lid a gentle tug to confirm it’s fully closed and not pinching the filter.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing/whistling (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Do a quick visual check that all clips are latched and the intake tube is still seated.
  • If your Suburban has a maintenance log, note the mileage/date for the next change.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
