🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Sierra 1500’s engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner box (airbox) under the hood. Replacing it keeps airflow clean, helps performance, and can improve fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers clear of the cooling fan area.
- ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was recently driven.
- Have a shop towel ready so you can wipe out loose dust in the airbox.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the airbox
- Open the hood and find the black plastic airbox connected to the large intake tube going to the engine.
- Use a flashlight to see the airbox clips or screws clearly.
Step 2: Open the airbox (two common versions)
- If your airbox uses metal clips: unhook the clips by hand (wear nitrile gloves).
- If your airbox uses screws or a worm-gear clamp: loosen using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet or a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Only loosen enough to open the lid.
Step 3: Lift the airbox lid
- Lift the top of the airbox up and away just enough to access the filter.
- If the intake tube is holding it tight, use the 8mm socket to loosen the clamp a little more, then reposition the lid.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check the airbox for leaves or dirt.
Step 5: Clean the airbox sealing surface
- Wipe the inside lip (where the filter seals) using a clean shop towel.
- Don’t drop debris into the intake opening.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around (this prevents unfiltered air leaks).
Step 7: Close and secure the airbox
- Lower the lid back into position.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the screws/clamps using the 8mm socket with 1/4" ratchet or the flat-blade screwdriver.
- Tighten to snug—do not overtighten plastic parts.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for whistling or hissing (a sign the airbox isn’t sealed).
- Visually re-check that all clips are latched and the intake tube clamp is snug.
- If you saw heavy dirt in the airbox, plan to inspect the filter more often.
