🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Sierra 1500’s engine air filter sits inside the air box and keeps dirt out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance, and protects the engine from dust and debris.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the open air box and intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Flashlight
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air box (black plastic box) near the front passenger-side of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and open the air box

  • Use a flashlight to find the air box lid seam and the retaining fasteners.
  • If your air box uses metal latches, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver if needed.
  • If your air box uses small bolts/screws instead, loosen them using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Don’t remove more parts than necessary.

Step 2: Lift the air box lid

  • Lift the lid straight up by hand; you usually only need to open it enough to slide the filter out.
  • If the lid feels stuck, re-check for a missed latch/8mm fastener using the flashlight.
  • Avoid pulling hard on the intake tube. (The intake tube is the large plastic/rubber tube feeding the engine.)

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Slide the filter out by hand.
  • Use the flashlight to look into the lower air box for leaves/sand.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the inside edge where the filter seals.
  • Do not let debris fall down the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the filter gasket edge isn’t folded over.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Close the air box lid and align it evenly with the lower half.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand (use a flathead screwdriver only if necessary).
  • If equipped with fasteners, snug them using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any whistling/hissing (can mean the air box lid isn’t fully sealed).
  • Re-check the latches/8mm fasteners if you hear an air leak sound.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
