🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Sierra 1500’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it is a quick maintenance job that can improve airflow and help protect the engine.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake ducting.
- ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fan and belts (they can move unexpectedly on some vehicles).
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter box open (unfiltered air can be pulled in).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Flathead screwdriver (medium)
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Clean shop towel
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Pop the hood and support it securely.
- Locate the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay (large black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the air filter box
- Use a flashlight to find the metal retaining clips around the air filter box lid.
- Release the clips by hand; if a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
- If your Sierra 1500 has screws/bolts instead of clips on the lid, loosen/remove them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Tip: Don’t force the lid—recheck for hidden fasteners.
Step 2: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole intake tube).
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Take note of how it sits in the box (the new one must sit the same way).
Step 3: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust/leaves from the bottom half of the air box.
- Wipe the rim where the filter seals so the new filter can seal tightly.
- Do not let dirt fall down the intake tube opening.
Step 4: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the air box, making sure it sits flat and fully seated in its groove.
- Check that the filter’s rubber edge (seal) is not folded or pinched.
Step 5: Close and secure the air filter box
- Lower the air box lid into place, making sure it lines up evenly all the way around.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the fasteners with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug only; there is typically no published torque for the air box lid fasteners).
- Do a quick visual check that no wiring or hoses are trapped under the lid.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for a hissing/whistling sound (can indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- If you hear a leak, shut it off and re-seat the lid and filter.
