🔧 Altima - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Altima is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the engine, and a clogged filter can reduce performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on a level surface and turn the engine off before opening the hood.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool if it was recently driven.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop leaves, sand, or tools into the air filter housing.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Altima on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • The air filter housing is the black plastic box near the front/right side of the engine bay, connected to the large intake tube.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Housing

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Stand at the front of your Altima and look for the rectangular black plastic air filter box.
  • The air filter housing is the plastic box that holds the paper filter before air enters the engine.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the top of the housing.
  • Keep dirt out of the intake.

Step 2: Release the Air Filter Housing Clips

  • Find the metal spring clips on the air filter housing cover.
  • A spring clip is a small metal latch that holds the plastic cover closed.
  • Use your fingers to flip the clips away from the cover.
  • If a clip is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help release it.
  • Do not pry hard against the plastic housing, because it can crack.

Step 3: Open the Housing Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the air filter housing cover slightly.
  • Do not force the intake tube or pull on any wiring nearby.
  • You only need enough space to slide the old filter out.
  • No bolts are normally removed for this filter replacement.

Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Pull the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
  • Note the direction it sits in the housing before removing it fully.
  • Check the filter for heavy dirt, leaves, oil, or damage.
  • Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe loose debris from the lower air box.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing by hand.
  • Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be bent, pinched, or sitting crooked.
  • A flat seal prevents dirt leaks.

Step 6: Close the Air Filter Housing

  • Lower the air filter housing cover back into place by hand.
  • Make sure the cover tabs are seated correctly before closing the clips.
  • Use your fingers to snap each metal spring clip back into place.
  • If needed, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to guide a clip, but do not force it.
  • There are no torque specs for the air filter housing clips because they are hand-latched.

Step 7: Final Visual Check

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe away any dust around the air box.
  • Confirm the housing cover is fully closed.
  • Confirm all clips are locked.
  • Confirm no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  • Listen for unusual hissing sounds near the air filter box, which can mean the cover is not sealed.
  • If the engine sounds normal, shut it off and close the hood.
  • No scan tool reset, battery registration, or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
