📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground and switch the ignition off.
• Press the fuel door to open it (capless door).
• Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt from around the filler opening so debris doesn’t fall inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and inspect the capless filler

• Open the fuel door.
• Use a flashlight to look into the filler neck.
• You should see a spring-loaded internal flap (this is the “capless” valve that seals vapors).
• If it’s dirty, don’t scrape it.

Step 2: Clean the sealing area

• Use a clean shop towel to wipe the rim around the filler opening.
• Do not push the towel down into the filler neck.

Step 3: Install the service/emergency cap

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Place the new service/emergency cap into the filler opening.
• Turn it clockwise by hand until it is snug and fully seated.
• Hand-tight only—no tools.

Step 4: Close up

• Close the fuel door until it clicks shut.
• Use the shop towel to wipe any fingerprints or fuel residue.

• Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell near the fuel door area.
• If you had a Check Engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few drive cycles to clear after the sealing issue is fixed.
• If the capless flap looks damaged or won’t spring closed, the fix is usually replacing the capless filler housing (a different repair).
