How to Replace the Easy Fuel Capless Filler Neck on a 2018 Ford Mustang
Step-by-step install tips for Ford’s capless system, plus tools, parts, safety notes, and torque specs
🔧 Mustang - Fuel Cap Replacement
Your Mustang uses Ford’s capless “Easy Fuel” system, so it normally does not have a traditional screw-on gas cap to replace. If something is missing or damaged, you’re usually dealing with either an accessory/locking cap someone added, or the capless filler neck (Easy Fuel) assembly itself.
Quick question (pick one): Are you trying to replace an add-on locking/screw cap, or is the capless Easy Fuel opening damaged/stuck and you want to replace that assembly?
Difficulty Level: Beginner (add-on cap) / Advanced (Easy Fuel assembly) | Estimated Time: 0.1 hours / 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ No smoking, no sparks, and keep shop lights/tools away from the filler opening.
- ⚠️ Only open the fuel door with the engine OFF.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel after the repair, stop and re-check everything.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Clean shop towels
- Trim removal tool
- 7mm socket
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or Nm capable)

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Mustang on level ground and shut the engine off.
- Let the car sit 2–3 minutes before opening the fuel door to reduce vapor puff-out.
- If you’re replacing the Easy Fuel assembly: work with the fuel level below half a tank if possible to reduce spill risk.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Path A (Most common): Install/replace an add-on locking “fuel cap” on the capless system
Step 1: Open and inspect the capless filler
- Open the fuel door.
- Use a flashlight to look at the capless opening for dirt or damage.
- Wipe the area with clean shop towels. Keep lint out of the opening.
Step 2: Install the accessory/locking cap (if that’s what you bought)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Thread/attach the accessory cap onto the capless filler per the cap kit instructions (designs vary).
- Hand-tighten only unless the cap manufacturer specifies a tighter setting. Overtightening can damage seals.
Step 3: Verify the fuel door closes correctly
- Close the fuel door and confirm it latches and sits flush.
- If the door won’t close, remove the accessory cap and confirm you bought a cap made for Ford’s capless system.
Path B: Replace the Easy Fuel capless filler neck assembly (only if damaged/stuck/leaking)
Step 1: Gain access to the filler neck area
- Use a trim removal tool to carefully release any trunk/liner clips near the fuel filler area (convertible trim varies).
- Use a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to remove any small screws holding the liner (if equipped).
- Pull the liner back just enough to see the filler neck mounting and connections.
Step 2: Remove the filler neck fasteners
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to remove the mounting fasteners at the filler neck area.
- Support the filler neck with your free hand so it doesn’t bind or crack.
Step 3: Disconnect and remove the old assembly
- Carefully disconnect any attached vapor/EVAP lines by releasing their locks (do not force).
- Remove the filler neck assembly from the vehicle.
- If you see a seal/O-ring: remove it and compare it to the new one.
Step 4: Install the new assembly
- Install the new seal/O-ring (if applicable) and lightly seat it by hand so it doesn’t pinch.
- Position the new filler neck assembly and reconnect lines until they click/lock.
- Reinstall mounting fasteners using an 8mm socket.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs) unless your replacement part specifies otherwise.
Step 5: Reinstall trim/liners
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall screws with a 7mm socket and clips using a trim removal tool (press clips in by hand).
âś… After Repair
- Start your Mustang and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
- If you replaced the Easy Fuel assembly, drive normally for 1–2 trips and watch for a check engine light (EVAP leaks can take time to detect).
- If a check engine light was on for an EVAP leak, you may need a scan tool to clear it after confirming the leak is fixed.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $60-$150 (add-on cap) / $300-$650 (Easy Fuel assembly parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $20-$60 (add-on cap) / $120-$320 (parts only)
You Save: $40-$90 / $180-$330 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1 hours / 1.5-3.0 hours.
