🔧 CX-50 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your CX-50’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the passenger-side dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic panels; they can crack in cold weather.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-50 on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
  • Open the front passenger door for easier access and lighting.
  • Slide the passenger seat back to create working room.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Clear the glove box

  • Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep the new filter clean.

Step 2: Lower the glove box to access the filter door

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • On the right side, unhook the glove box “damper” (the small slow-open arm) by gently pulling it off its pin. It should pop off with light pressure.
  • Gently press the glove box sides inward so the stops clear the dash opening, then let the glove box swing down.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box for the cabin filter access cover.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Locate the rectangular filter door behind the glove box.
  • Release the locking tabs on the cover by hand; if it’s tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently help the tab move.
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
  • Keep it level as you remove it to avoid dumping leaves and dust.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame (it will say “AIR FLOW”).
  • Install the filter in the same direction as the arrow indicates for your CX-50’s housing (match the direction shown on the old filter if it’s still readable).
  • Slide it fully into place so it sits flat and doesn’t bend.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter access cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up, press the sides inward again, and let the stops pass back into position.
  • Reattach the damper arm to its pin on the right side.
  • Open/close the glove box a couple times to confirm it moves smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and run the fan on medium to confirm normal airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to verify the fan sounds normal (no rubbing/whistling).
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; it often clears after a short drive.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
