🔧 Forester - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen smells and keeps airflow strong.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🛑 Don’t force the glove box—plastic tabs can snap if bent too far.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Open the passenger door for easy access to the glove box.
- Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls behind the dash.
- Take a quick photo before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the glove box area
- Use a flashlight to look under/around the glove box so you can see the damper and filter door clearly.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2: Detach the glove box damper
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- On the right side, find the glove box damper (a small arm that slows the glove box). If it’s tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop it off its peg.
- Go gentle—this clip is easy to crack.
Step 3: Lower the glove box past the side stops
- With the glove box open, use your hands to gently push the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
- While squeezing, let the glove box swing downward. This releases the side “stops” (built-in tabs that normally keep it from dropping).
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Remove the housing cover by pressing the side tabs with your fingers. If needed, use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to help press the tabs.
Step 5: Pull out the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use the flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the housing, and remove any loose debris by hand (with nitrile gloves on).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it so the arrow matches airflow direction (typically DOWN toward the blower motor on the Forester).
- Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t bend or bunch up.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter housing cover by hand until it clicks into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and gently push the sides inward again so the stops pass back into position.
- Reconnect the glove box damper on the right side by hand (or gently assist with the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)).
âś… After Repair
- Start your Forester and run the fan at medium/high for 10–20 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no rattles behind the glove box.
- If you still smell musty odors, you may need an A/C evaporator cleaner service as well.
