šŸ”§ Escape - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Escape’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the glove box hinges while lowering it.
  • āš ļø Do not force plastic tabs—if it won’t move, re-check the release points.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool set (specialty)
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the HVAC system OFF (fan OFF) before removing the filter.
  • Move passenger seat back to give yourself working room.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the sides and bottom of the glove box opening.

Step 2: Release the glove box so it can swing down

  • On the right side, locate the small ā€œdampenerā€ arm (a little strut that slows the glove box). Use a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to gently pop it off its pin if needed. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching.)
  • Push the glove box sides inward with your hands (one side at a time) to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box opening, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Use your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool set (specialty) to press the cover’s tabs and pull the cover off.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the filter slot, and remove loose debris by hand (with nitrile gloves on).

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Look for the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame.
  • Install the filter with the airflow arrow pointing down (toward the floor). If your new filter is labeled ā€œAIR FLOW,ā€ match it to the direction of airflow through the housing.
  • Tip: If it buckles, pull it out and re-seat.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up, push the sides inward again, and guide it past the stops.
  • Reconnect the dampener arm on the right side (it should snap back onto its pin).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Escape and turn the fan to a medium speed to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • If you notice a whistling noise, recheck that the filter cover is fully clipped in.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
