šŸ”§ Traverse - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Traverse’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). When it’s dirty, you may notice weak airflow, musty smells, or more dust inside.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Work gently around the glove box and trim to avoid breaking plastic clips.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the passenger front door for easier access.
  • Slide the passenger seat back to give yourself room to work.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove any contents.
  • Use a small flashlight to look along the sides for the glove box ā€œstopsā€ (little tabs that limit how far it opens).

Step 2: Release the glove box to drop it down

  • On the right side, unhook the small ā€œdamperā€ arm (it slows the glove box). Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pop it off if needed. Go slow—plastic clips can snap.
  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box rotate downward.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the cabin filter cover door (rectangular panel).
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to help.
  • If your cover uses screws on your Traverse, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/dust into the housing.
  • Use the small flashlight to check for debris inside the filter box and remove any loose leaves by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Insert the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame and match it to the airflow direction marking on the housing (if shown). If no marking is visible, install it the same way the old filter came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seated—no curled edges.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter access door and snap the tabs back into place by hand.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only; do not overtighten).
  • Lift the glove box back up, push the sides inward to pass the stops, then reattach the damper arm on the right side.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and run the fan on medium, then high. Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to verify normal operation.
  • If you still smell musty odor, the evaporator case may need cleaning (separate service).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
