🔧 Corolla - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
This guides you through replacing the cabin air filter in your Corolla. This filter cleans the air that comes through the vents, helping with dust, smells, and allergies.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Make sure the ignition is OFF and the key is out of the vehicle.
- 🔹Do not turn on the blower fan while the filter and cover are removed.
- 🔹Be gentle with plastic parts around the glove box; they can crack if forced.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Flashlight
- 🔹Clean shop rag or microfiber cloth
- 🔹Disposable dust mask
- 🔹Mechanic gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Cabin air filter (HVAC filter, for glove box area) - Qty: 1
- 🔹Interior trim cleaning wipes - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park the Corolla on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key or switch off the start button.
- 🔹Make sure the HVAC controls are OFF (fan off, A/C off).
- 🔹Empty the glove box so nothing falls when you lower it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- 🔹Open the glove box on the passenger side fully by pulling the handle.
- 🔹Remove any items from the glove box so you can move it freely.
- 🔹Wear your mechanic gloves and put on safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from dust.
Step 2: Disconnect the damper arm on the glove box
- 🔹On the right side of the glove box, use your flashlight to find a small plastic arm attached to the side of the glove box. This is the damper arm (it slows the glove box when it opens).
- 🔹Gently push the arm off its pin on the glove box by hand. Pull straight out toward you; do not twist.
- 🔹Let the arm hang down; do not bend it sharply. Pull gently, plastic breaks easily.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower the glove box
- 🔹On both sides of the glove box, near the back, there are small plastic “stops” that hit the dashboard and keep the glove box from falling down.
- 🔹With one hand on each side of the glove box, gently squeeze the sides inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
- 🔹Let the glove box swing down carefully and hang, giving you access behind it. Support the glove box so it doesn’t drop.
Step 4: Locate the cabin filter cover
- 🔹Behind the lowered glove box, use your flashlight to find a rectangular black plastic cover in the center. This is the cabin filter door on the HVAC housing.
- 🔹You will see small tabs on the left and right edges of this cover that hold it in place.
Step 5: Remove the cabin filter cover
- 🔹With one hand on each side of the cover, press the locking tabs inward.
- 🔹Pull the cover straight toward you to remove it. Set it aside where it will not get lost.
- 🔹There are no bolts here, so no torque specs are needed.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- 🔹Look at how the old filter is installed. You should see an arrow on its edge showing airflow direction, usually pointing down for the Corolla.
- 🔹Grab the front edge of the filter and pull it straight out. It may flex a little; that is normal.
- 🔹Wear your disposable dust mask here, as dust and debris may fall.
Step 7: Clean the filter housing area
- 🔹Use your clean shop rag or microfiber cloth to gently wipe inside the filter slot and the surrounding plastic.
- 🔹Remove any leaves, dust, or debris you can reach. Do not push debris deeper into the system.
- 🔹If needed, use interior trim cleaning wipes to clean the glove box area.
Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter
- 🔹Check the new filter for an arrow that says “Air Flow”.
- 🔹On the Corolla, airflow is from top to bottom, so the arrow should point down when the filter is installed.
- 🔹Slide the new filter into the slot, keeping it level and making sure it sits fully inside with no edge bent or sticking out. Do not crush the filter pleats.
Step 9: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- 🔹Align the cabin filter cover with the opening.
- 🔹Push the cover straight in until both side tabs click into place.
- 🔹Gently pull on the cover to confirm it is locked and secure.
Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box
- 🔹Lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
- 🔹Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward again so the stops pass inside the dash opening, then release so they rest behind the dash as before.
- 🔹On the right side, push the damper arm back onto its pin on the glove box until it clicks into place.
- 🔹Open and close the glove box a few times to confirm it moves smoothly and does not fall freely.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Turn the ignition ON and set the fan to low speed. Check that air flows from the vents normally and no cover pieces are rattling.
- 🔹Switch between different vent modes (face, feet, defrost) to be sure everything sounds normal.
- 🔹Check the glove box is securely latched and the damper still slows its movement.
- 🔹Note your mileage and date; cabin filters are usually replaced about once a year, more often in dusty areas.
