🔧 Rogue - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents inside your Rogue. A dirty filter can cause weak airflow, bad smells, or more dust inside the car.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔋 Keep the ignition off while you work to avoid moving parts in the HVAC system.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box first so nothing falls out when you drop it down.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves if you have dust allergies; the old filter can be dirty.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧤 Nitrile or mechanic gloves
  • đź‘“ Safety glasses
  • đź’ˇ Flashlight
  • 🪛 Trim removal tool (plastic)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 📦 Cabin air filter (HVAC, behind glove box) - Qty: 1
  • 🧴 Interior cleaner or disinfectant wipes - Qty: 1
  • 🧻 Paper towels or shop towels - Qty: 1 pack

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to P (Park), and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key or key fob from the vehicle.
  • 🧽 Clear out the glove box completely so you can drop it down without items jamming it.
  • đź’ˇ Have your new cabin filter ready and note the "AIR FLOW" arrow direction printed on it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box area

  • Sit in the front passenger seat and fully open the glove box by pulling the handle.
  • Remove any remaining items from the glove box so you can see both side walls clearly.
  • Use the flashlight to get a better view of the sides and the area behind the glove box.

Step 2: Detach the glove box damper

  • The damper is a small arm on the right side of the glove box that slows it down when closing.
  • Support the glove box with one hand so it does not drop suddenly.
  • With your other hand, gently push the damper arm sideways off its pin on the glove box. If it feels tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry it off.
  • Do not force metal tools here to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 3: Release glove box side stops and lower the glove box

  • On each side of the glove box, you’ll see a molded plastic stop that hits the dash opening.
  • Gently push the right side of the glove box inward to clear the stop, then the left side. This lets the glove box drop further down.
  • Allow the glove box to swing down toward the floor so you can see behind it. Support it with your hand so it doesn’t slam.

Step 4: Locate the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the dropped glove box, look straight toward the center of the dash. You’ll see a rectangular plastic cover on the HVAC housing (black plastic box).
  • This is the cabin air filter access door. It usually has small tabs on the sides or top/bottom.
  • Use the flashlight to clearly see the locking tabs.

Step 5: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Press in on the locking tab(s) with your fingers. If they are stiff, gently press with the edge of the trim removal tool (plastic).
  • Pull the access door straight off and set it aside where it won’t get lost.
  • Note how the door fits; it only goes on one way.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Grasp the exposed edge of the filter and slowly slide it straight out toward you.
  • If it catches, wiggle it slightly side to side while pulling. Do not bend it sharply; that can leave debris inside.
  • Take note of the "AIR FLOW" arrow or any markings on the old filter and which direction it was facing.
  • Place the old filter in a trash bag right away; it may have leaves, dust, or bugs.

Step 7: Clean the filter housing area (optional but recommended)

  • Use a paper towel or shop towel to wipe the inside edges of the filter slot gently.
  • If you see loose debris (like leaves), carefully remove it by hand. Do not push it deeper into the housing.
  • You can lightly wipe around the opening with interior cleaner or disinfectant wipes, but do not soak the area.

Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Look at the new filter and find the "AIR FLOW" arrow.
  • On your Rogue, airflow goes from top to bottom through the filter. The arrow should point down when installed.
  • Gently slide the new filter into the slot, keeping the arrow pointing down. Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing, with no edges folded.
  • If it resists, pull out and re-align; do not force it.

Step 9: Reinstall the cabin filter access door

  • Align the access door with the opening in the HVAC housing.
  • Engage the bottom or side tabs first (as it was when removed), then press on the opposite side until you hear or feel it click into place.
  • Give the door a light tug to confirm it is securely latched. There is no torque spec here; it just snaps in.

Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
  • Push one side of the glove box inward again to clear the stop, then the other side, and guide it back into its original track.
  • Reattach the damper arm on the right side by lining it up with its pin and pressing it back on by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box a few times to ensure it moves smoothly and the damper is working.

Step 11: Reload the glove box and test the HVAC

  • Put your items back into the glove box, but avoid overstuffing it.
  • Start the engine or turn the ignition to ON, then turn on the fan and A/C or heater.
  • Cycle through fan speeds and modes. Check for steady airflow and make sure there are no odd rattles or flapping sounds.
  • A slightly fresher smell and smoother airflow are normal.

âś… After Repair

  • 🌀 Run the fan on all speeds to confirm good airflow from the vents.
  • đź‘‚ Listen for any unusual noises from behind the glove box that might suggest the filter or cover is not seated correctly.
  • đź“… Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
  • 📲 No scan tool or system reset is required for this job.
