šŸ”§ Altima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Altima’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and can improve defrost performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the car.
  • šŸ›‘ Don’t force plastic tabs—use steady pressure to avoid breaking them.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • šŸ“¦ Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
  • šŸ”¦ Have a flashlight ready—filter cover tabs can be hard to see.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and ā€œdropā€ the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently help the glove box sides flex inward (if needed) so the stops can pass the dash opening.
  • Lower the glove box down slowly.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper (soft-open arm)

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small damper arm (it slows the glove box as it opens).
  • Carefully pop the damper arm off its pin using your fingers or the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty).
  • Tip: Support the glove box so it doesn’t drop.

Step 3: Find the cabin filter access door

  • Look behind the glove box opening using a small flashlight.
  • Locate the rectangular cabin filter cover (typically a small door with tabs).

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Release the cover tabs by hand (or gently with the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)).
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—filters can be dusty.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction matters)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing in the same direction as the old filter came out.
  • If you didn’t note the old direction: install the new filter so the arrow points toward the blower motor (deeper into the HVAC box).
  • Tip: Don’t crush the filter—keep it square.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover until it clicks into place.
  • Reconnect the glove box damper arm by pushing it back onto its pin.
  • Lift the glove box back up and guide the stops back into position.
  • Close the glove box and reopen it to confirm smooth operation.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸŒ¬ļø Start the car and run the fan at all speeds to confirm good airflow.
  • šŸ‘ƒ If there was an odor, run fresh air (not recirculate) for a few minutes.
  • šŸ”Ž Make sure the glove box opens/closes smoothly and doesn’t bind.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
