1500 Classic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement ๐ฌ๏ธ
Your 1500 Classic uses a cabin air filter that sits behind the glove box. On these trucks, Ram designed it so you have to cut a small access slot the first time, then you can service it easily in the future.
Before You Start ๐งฐ
- ๐งค Safety
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, key off.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
- ๐ ๏ธ Tools & Supplies
- New cabin air filter (Ram 1500 Classic โ behind-glove-box style; usually charcoal or paper type).
- Trim tool or flat plastic pry tool โ a plastic tool to pop panels without scratching.
- Utility knife / sharp box cutter โ to cut the access door outline in the HVAC housing.
- Small vacuum (optional) โ to clean leaves/dust inside the housing.
- Work light (optional) โ itโs a bit dark behind the glove box.
Important Notes โ ๏ธ
- โ ๏ธ Cutting the access slot: Ramโs HVAC box has a marked rectangle where the cabin filter door goes. You carefully cut along this outline once. After that, you can reuse the opening.
- โ ๏ธ Cut slowly: The plastic is not very thick, but you donโt want to cut too deep and damage anything behind it. Light pressure, multiple passes.
Step 1 โ Lower and Release the Glove Box ๐ฆ
- ๐ Open the glove box fully.
- ๐ On the right side of the glove box, locate the small damper arm (a little plastic arm that slows the glove box opening).
- Gently push it off its pin on the glove box side. It just pops off.
- ๐ Look at the left and right sides of the glove box interior โ youโll see plastic stops that hit the dash and keep it from dropping all the way down.
- ๐ With the glove box open, gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward so those stops clear the dash opening, then let the glove box swing down and hang.
Step 2 โ Locate the Cabin Filter Access Area ๐
- ๐ง Behind the glove box youโll see the large black plastic HVAC housing (this is the air box that holds the heater/AC parts).
- ๐ง On the front face of that housing (toward you), slightly to the right of center, look for a rectangular outline molded into the plastic.
- This rectangle is the cabin filter door outline. It may have small corner marks or a faint raised border.
Step 3 โ Cut the Access Door โ๏ธ
- ๐ช Use your utility knife:
- Score (lightly cut) along the outline first. Donโt try to go full depth in one pass.
- Make several light passes until the plastic weakens and you can flex or push the panel inward.
- ๐งน Once the rectangle is cut, pull the piece out. This becomes your new opening for the cabin filter.
- ๐งน Check inside with a light and remove any loose plastic bits so they donโt get into the blower fan.
Step 4 โ Remove the Old Cabin Filter ๐ชซ
- ๐ Look inside the opening โ youโll see the end of the cabin filter.
- ๐ Note the airflow arrow printed on the old filter if you can see it (usually points down on these trucks).
- ๐ Grab the edge of the filter and slowly pull it straight out.
- It may flex a bit; thatโs normal.
- If it catches, wiggle gently side to side while pulling.
- ๐ Once out, check for leaves, dust, or debris inside the housing and vacuum if needed.
Step 5 โ Install the New Cabin Filter ๐
- ๐ On the new filter, find the โAIRFLOWโ arrow.
- On the 1500 Classic, airflow is typically from top to bottom, so the arrow should point down when installed.
- ๐ Gently slide the new filter into the slot:
- Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing.
- If it feels too tight, back it out and reinsert straight and centered.
Step 6 โ Add/Install a Door (If Included) ๐ช
- ๐งฉ Many replacement filters for these trucks come with a clip-on plastic door for the opening you just cut.
- If your kit includes a door, line up the tabs with the opening and snap it into place.
- If no door is included, you can leave it open or reuse the cut-out piece with tape, but a proper door is better to keep dust out.
Step 7 โ Reinstall the Glove Box ๐ฅ
- ๐ Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- ๐ Squeeze the sides in again so the stops clear the dash opening, then let them pop back into place.
- ๐ Reattach the damper arm on the right side by snapping it back onto its pin.
- ๐ Close and open the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly.
Step 8 โ Quick Check โ
- ๐ Start the engine, turn on the fan and A/C or heat.
- ๐ Listen for any unusual noises (like plastic rubbing or rattling) from behind the glove box.
- If you hear something, shut off the fan, reopen the glove box, and make sure the filter is seated and no plastic scraps are inside.
When to Replace & Tips ๐ก
- ๐ Replace the cabin filter about once a year or every 15,000โ20,000 miles, or sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
- ๐ซ๏ธ If you notice weak airflow, bad smells, or foggy windows that clear slowly, the cabin filter is a common cause.
