🔧 CX-30 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your CX-30’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF before working near the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic clips—use steady pressure to avoid breaking tabs.
  • 🧼 Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the filter housing.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool set

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
  • 📦 Empty the glove box so nothing spills when it swings down.
  • 💡 Have your small flashlight ready so you can see the filter cover clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep the new filter clean.

Step 2: Release the glove box “stops” so it drops down

  • With the glove box open, use your hands to gently push the glove box sides inward so the built-in stops can pass the dash opening.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool set to gently help the edge move past the stop. Steady pressure beats brute force.

Step 3: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (a small plastic piece that slows the glove box). A damper is a part that makes the glove box open/close smoothly.
  • Use a plastic trim tool set to gently pop the damper arm off its pin/clip (don’t pry hard).
  • Let the glove box hang down farther to expose the cabin filter access area.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Look behind the dropped glove box with a small flashlight to find the rectangular filter cover.
  • Press the cover tabs and pull the cover straight off by hand (use the plastic trim tool set only if needed).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level so trapped dust doesn’t spill into the housing.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (direction matters)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out. If the old filter is missing, align the arrow to match the vehicle airflow through the housing (the arrow must point in the direction air moves through the filter).
  • Slide the filter in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t fold.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side (press it back onto its pin) using your hands or a plastic trim tool set gently.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops go back past the dash opening.
  • Close the glove box.

✅ After Repair

  • 🌬️ Start the engine and run the fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • 👃 If you had a musty smell, run fresh air (not recirculation) for a few minutes.
  • 🧾 Write down the mileage/date so you know when you last changed it.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
