🔧 Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Highlander’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the glove box area.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap in cold/hard conditions.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the glove box hinge as it drops down.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and unload the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side for a small “damper” arm (a little strut that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side, unhook the damper arm from the glove box using your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool.
- Go slow; the clip pops off gently.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box (near the top) to release the side “stops.”
- Let the glove box rotate downward until you can see the cabin filter access door behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Locate the rectangular cabin filter door.
- Pinch the tabs on the door and pull it straight off by hand (use a plastic trim removal tool only if needed).
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the housing.
Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter’s frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one (the arrow must match airflow direction indicated on the filter/housing).
- If it won’t slide, it’s likely flipped.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter door until both tabs click in by hand.
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side using your fingers.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Highlander and run the fan on medium for 30 seconds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
- If you had a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes to confirm it improved.
- Put your glove box items back.
