🔧 CX-5 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your CX-5’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC vents (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Avoid breathing dust when removing the old filter; wear a mask if it’s very dirty.
  • ⚠️ Do not force plastic glove box stops—gentle pressure prevents breaking clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Phillips screwdriver #2

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
  • If your new filter has an airflow arrow, find it now so you install it the right way.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove everything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for a small “damper” arm (a damper is a small support that slows the glove box as it opens).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • If you see a small arm on the right side, gently unclip it from the glove box using your fingers.
  • If there is a small screw holding the damper, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Go slow—clips release with gentle pressure.

Step 3: Release the glove box side stops

  • With the glove box open, press inward on both sides of the glove box (near the top edges) using your hands.
  • While pressing the sides in, let the glove box swing downward past the stops.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the cabin filter access door behind the glove box.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Find the rectangular access cover on the HVAC case.
  • Press the side tabs and pull the cover off by hand.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level as you remove it to avoid dumping leaves/dust into the blower housing.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses if the filter is very dirty.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same size.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • If the filter has an airflow arrow, point it in the same direction as the original (typically toward the rear of the vehicle, into the HVAC box).
  • If it won’t slide in, don’t force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter access door by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press inward on both sides to pop it back past the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm (and reinstall any screw using a Phillips screwdriver #2).

âś… After Repair

  • Start your CX-5 and run the fan at medium-high speed to confirm good airflow.
  • Turn on A/C, then heat, and listen for any ticking (a leaf stuck in the housing can cause noise).
  • If airflow seems worse than before, re-check that the filter is seated and oriented correctly.
