🔧 Sierra 1500 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter located behind the glove box on your Sierra 1500. This filter cleans the air that comes through the vents, helping with dust, odors, and HVAC performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Turn the ignition off and remove the key or switch off the start button before working near the dash.
  • 🔸Do not force plastic panels or the glove box; they can crack if bent too far.
  • 🔸If you have anything heavy in the glove box, empty it first so it doesn’t fall on you.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 🔸Flashlight
  • 🔸Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
  • 🔸Interior trim cleaning wipes - Qty: 1 pack

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🔸Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸Turn off the HVAC system and the ignition so the blower fan is not running.
  • 🔸Empty the glove box so it’s light and nothing falls out when you lower it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box

  • 🔸Open the glove box fully.
  • 🔸Remove any items from inside so you can move it easily.
  • 🔸Put on your mechanic gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.

Step 2: Release the glove box side damper

  • 🔸On the right side of the glove box, locate the small plastic arm (this is the damper that slows the glove box opening).
  • 🔸Use your trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box side.
  • 🔸Let the damper arm hang freely; do not pull it hard or twist it.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • 🔸On both sides of the glove box, you’ll see plastic stops that keep it from dropping all the way.
  • 🔸Gently press inward on both sides of the glove box with your hands to clear those stops from the dash opening.
  • 🔸Slowly swing the glove box down toward the floor so you can see behind it. Use the flashlight for better visibility.

Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter door

  • 🔸Behind the lowered glove box, look for a rectangular black plastic cover on the HVAC housing (this is the filter door).
  • 🔸Use the flashlight to clearly see the tabs or clips on the sides of this door.

Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter door

  • 🔸Use your fingers or the edge of the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently press or pry the side tabs inward.
  • 🔸Pull the filter door straight off and set it aside where it won’t get lost.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • 🔸Grab the exposed edge of the old filter and slowly slide it straight out by hand.
  • 🔸Keep it level if possible; it may be full of dust and leaves.
  • 🔸Note the airflow arrow printed on the old filter and the direction it was installed. Match this on the new filter.

Step 7: Clean the filter housing area

  • 🔸Use your hand (with mechanic gloves on) to gently remove any large debris inside the housing.
  • 🔸If needed, lightly wipe the housing edge with an interior trim cleaning wipe so the new filter seals well.

Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter

  • 🔸Check the new filter for an “AIRFLOW” arrow.
  • 🔸On your Sierra 1500, the airflow typically goes from top to bottom, so the arrow should point downward. Confirm with any marking on the housing if present.
  • 🔸Slide the new filter straight into the housing by hand, making sure it seats fully and is not bent or crushed. If it binds, back out and re‑align.

Step 9: Reinstall the cabin air filter door

  • 🔸Position the filter door over the opening, lining up the tabs.
  • 🔸Press it firmly until both side clips snap into place by hand.
  • 🔸Use the flashlight to confirm the door is fully seated all around.

Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box

  • 🔸Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
  • 🔸Gently press inward on both sides of the glove box to get the side stops back past the dash opening, then release.
  • 🔸Reconnect the right-side damper arm to its pin on the glove box using your fingers, or use the trim removal tool (plastic) to help pop it into place.
  • 🔸Open and close the glove box several times to make sure it moves smoothly and the damper works normally.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Start the engine and turn on the HVAC fan at different speeds; check that air is flowing well from the vents.
  • 🔸Switch between fresh air and recirculation modes and make sure you don’t hear any unusual noises from the blower area.
  • 🔸If you notice any new rattles around the glove box, reopen and confirm the damper arm and side stops are seated correctly.
  • 🔸Plan to replace the cabin air filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty conditions.
