🔧 Ranger - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Ranger’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
- 👓 Use safety glasses if debris may fall from the filter housing.
- 🧹 Avoid shaking the old filter to reduce dust in the cabin.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 📦 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out while you lower it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and drop the glove box
- Open the glove box fully by gettting it out of the way.
- Use your hands to push the glove box sides inward to clear the stops (the “stops” are the plastic tabs that prevent it from dropping all the way).
- If equipped with a glove box damper (a small arm/strap on the right side), gently pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool (specialty).
Step 2: Access the cabin filter door
- With the glove box lowered, use a flashlight to look straight behind it for the cabin filter access cover.
- Use your fingers to find the cover tabs/clips.
Step 3: Remove the filter cover
- Press the cover tabs by hand and pull the cover off.
- If a tab is stubborn, gently assist with a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) (do not pry hard).
- Tip: Take a photo before removing parts.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Wear nitrile gloves and slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level so dust doesn’t spill into the housing.
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter (it will say “AIR FLOW” or show an arrow).
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one came out.
- Push it fully into the housing without bending it.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Snap the filter cover back on by hand until the tabs click.
- Reattach the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back into place by hand.
- Lift the glove box and push the sides inward again to pass the stops, then close it.
✅ After Repair
- 🌀 Start your Ranger and run the blower on high for 30 seconds.
- 👃 Verify airflow is stronger and there are no new rattles behind the glove box.
- 🔍 If you hear clicking, re-check the glove box damper and filter cover tabs.
