šŸ”§ Traverse - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Traverse’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Traverse on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Remove any items inside so they don’t spill.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box area so you can spot the small ā€œdamperā€ arm.

Step 2: Release the glove box damper

  • On the right side, locate the glove box damper (a small plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens).
  • Carefully pop it off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool (specialty).
  • Go slow; it’s easy to snap.

Step 3: Lower the glove box past the stops

  • Find the glove box ā€œstopsā€ (the plastic tabs on the sides that prevent it from dropping all the way down).
  • Gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward with your hands to clear the stops.
  • Let the glove box rotate downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs with your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool (specialty), then remove the cover.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—the old filter can be dusty.
  • Note the airflow arrow printed on the filter (this shows which way air flows).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide the new cabin air filter into the slot in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it seats fully and isn’t bent or folded.
  • If the new filter has an ā€œAir Flowā€ arrow, match it to the direction shown/used previously.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover and press until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and squeeze the sides inward again to pass the stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin by hand (use a flashlight if needed to align it).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Traverse and run the fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure there are no odd noises behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a whistle, re-check that the filter is fully seated and the cover is clipped in evenly.
