- 🛑 Work with the engine off and the key removed from the ignition.
- 🧤 There are plastic clips behind the glove box—work gently to avoid breaking them.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
- 🧳 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
- 💡 Put on your safety glasses and gloves before you start.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
- Use your hands to remove all items from the glove box so they don’t fall when it drops down.
- Use the flashlight to see the sides and back of the glove box area clearly.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- The damper arm is a small plastic “arm” on the right side of the glove box that slows it as it opens.
- Use your hands to gently push the damper arm off its pin on the glove box side. Pull straight outward; don’t twist.
- Use the flashlight to clearly see how the arm clips on and off. Take note for reinstallation.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- On both sides of the glove box, there are flexible plastic stops that prevent it from falling all the way down.
- Use your hands to press inward on both sides of the glove box near the stops so they clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box pivot downward slowly and hang, exposing the area behind it.
- Use the flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter access cover behind the glove box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- The cover is a plastic panel with small side tabs directly in front of the filter.
- Use your hands to squeeze or unclip the side tabs of the cover—usually by pressing inwards or pulling them gently.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
- Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe light dust from the cover if needed.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Note the airflow arrow on the old filter before removing it. In your Equinox, the arrow should point down (airflow direction).
- Use your hands to carefully slide the old filter straight out toward you.
- If debris falls, use the small shop vacuum to gently vacuum the filter housing area.
- Do not push debris further into the HVAC box. Vacuum gently, don’t poke.
Step 6: Clean the filter area (optional but recommended)
- Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe light dust around the opening of the filter housing.
- Use the small shop vacuum to remove leaves or heavier dirt you can see.
- If using cabin vent disinfectant spray, follow the product instructions and apply lightly into the intake area, not soaking the housing.
Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the new filter for an airflow arrow printed on the side.
- Position the filter so the arrow points downward, matching how the old one was installed.
- Use your hands to slide the new filter straight into the housing. Make sure it sits flat and fully inside, with no edges folded.
- If it resists, remove and re-aim it carefully.
Step 8: Reinstall the filter access cover
- Align the cover with the filter opening.
- Use your hands to press the cover into place until both side tabs click securely.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the cover is evenly seated all the way around.
Step 9: Raise and secure the glove box
- Use your hands to lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
- Press in on both sides again to let the side stops pass back into their slots, then release them so they rest correctly.
- Use your hands to reconnect the damper arm on the right side: line it up with the pin and push it on until it clicks.
- Open and close the glove box a few times to confirm smooth operation.
Step 10: Reload the glove box
- Use your hands to return your items to the glove box, avoiding overloading the door with heavy objects.
- Close the glove box securely.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start the engine and turn on the fan at different speeds. Check for normal airflow and no unusual noises from the dash.
- 🌬 Try both fresh air and recirculation modes to confirm air is flowing well.
- 👃 You may notice a cleaner smell and slightly stronger airflow after replacement.
- 📝 Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty conditions.
