🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, and debris before air reaches the vents. Replacing it helps keep airflow strong and the air inside your Sierra cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Let the glove box and dash area cool if the vehicle was recently run.
  • Be gentle with plastic tabs and stops; they can crack easily.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the blower fan is off.
  • Open the glove box and clear out everything inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and support the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use both hands to let it hang down slowly once the stops release.
  • Move slowly to avoid breaking tabs.

Step 2: Release the glove box damper and stops

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers to gently unclip the glove box damper on the side.
  • Press inward on the glove box sides to clear the stops and lower the box fully.
  • If equipped with a trim retainer, use a trim panel removal tool to pop it free.

Step 3: Locate the cabin air filter door

  • Use a flashlight to find the rectangular filter cover behind the glove box area.
  • Remove the cover tabs carefully by hand or with the trim panel removal tool.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old filter out slowly.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame.
  • Take a photo before removing it.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new cabin air filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter seats flat and fully inside the housing.
  • If the filter has an airflow arrow, point it the same direction as the old filter or toward the cabin side if marked that way on the filter.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter door and press it until it clicks in place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and snap the side stops back into position.
  • Reattach the glove box damper.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower on and check for normal airflow.
  • Listen for rattles from the glove box area.
  • If air still smells musty, check for moisture in the HVAC system.
