🔧 Altima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the cabin air filter helps your Altima’s heating and A/C system breathe properly and keeps dust, pollen, and debris out of the cabin. On the Altima, the filter is accessed from the passenger-side lower dash/glove box area.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic trim pieces; they can crack if pulled at the wrong angle.
- ⚠️ The passenger-side airbag is nearby in the dash, but this job does not require airbag removal or battery disconnect.
- ⚠️ Keep small items out of the blower opening so they do not fall into the HVAC box.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool set

- Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Altima on level ground.
- 🔒 Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
- 🧤 Put on gloves and safety glasses. The old filter may contain dust and leaves.
- 💡 Move the passenger seat fully rearward to give yourself more room.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Passenger-Side Work Area
- Open the front passenger door fully.
- Use a flashlight to look under the passenger side of the dash near the glove box.
- The cabin filter door is located on the HVAC housing behind the lower glove box area. The HVAC housing is the plastic air box for the heater and A/C system.
- Tip: Take a photo first.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Passenger Dash Panel if Needed
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently release the lower passenger-side trim panel if it blocks access.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching the interior.
- If screws are fitted, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove them.
- Set the panel and screws aside in a safe place.
- No torque spec is required for the plastic trim screws; reinstall snug only.
Step 3: Find the Cabin Filter Cover
- Use a flashlight to locate the narrow rectangular cabin filter cover on the side of the HVAC housing.
- The cover usually has small plastic locking tabs.
- Look for the cover shape rather than the filter itself; the filter sits behind this door.
Step 4: Remove the Filter Cover
- Use your fingers to squeeze or release the plastic tabs on the cabin filter cover.
- If the tab is stiff, use a trim removal tool set carefully to help release it.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
- Do not snap the tabs.
Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Use your fingers to pull the old cabin air filter out of the slot.
- If it is tight, gently pinch the filter sides and slide it out slowly.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves or debris inside the filter opening.
- Do not use metal picks or sharp tools inside the HVAC housing.
Step 6: Check the Airflow Direction
- Look at the airflow arrow printed on the old filter before throwing it away.
- Match the new cabin air filter arrow to the same airflow direction.
- Airflow direction means the direction air travels through the filter, not the direction the filter slides in.
- Arrow direction matters.
Step 7: Install the New Cabin Air Filter
- Slide the new cabin air filter into the filter slot by hand.
- Keep the filter square and do not crush the pleats. Pleats are the folded paper sections that trap dust.
- Push it in until it sits fully inside the housing.
- If it resists, pull it back out and realign it. Do not force it.
Step 8: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand.
- Press until the tabs click into place.
- Gently tug the cover to confirm it is secure.
Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Passenger Trim
- Use your hands to align the lower passenger trim panel with its clips.
- Press the panel into place until the clips seat fully.
- If screws were removed, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall them.
- Torque to snug by hand only; do not overtighten plastic trim screws.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Altima and turn the blower fan on low, then high.
- ✅ Check that air comes from the vents normally.
- ✅ Listen for clicking, rubbing, or leaf-noise from the blower area.
- ✅ If airflow is weak, recheck that the filter is fully seated and facing the correct direction.
- ✅ Replace the cabin air filter about every 12 months or 12,000-15,000 miles, sooner in dusty areas.
