🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your Sierra uses a cabin air filter behind the glove box. This is a simple job and usually does not need any special disassembly beyond lowering the glove box and swapping the filter. Keep the new filter oriented the same way.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Work gently around the glove box so the hinge stops and damper do not break.
  • Do not force the filter cover; it should release by hand.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Flat trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Switch the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the truck.
  • Open the glove box and clear out everything inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Remove all items so nothing falls out when the box is lowered.
  • Work slowly to avoid broken clips.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a flat trim tool only if needed to gently help the glove box side stops clear the opening.
  • Push the sides of the glove box inward by hand so the box can swing down farther.
  • Lower it carefully until it hangs down and exposes the HVAC access area behind it.

Step 3: Remove the cabin air filter cover

  • Use your hands to release the filter access cover behind the glove box.
  • If the cover feels tight, use a flat trim tool very gently on the edge.
  • Remove the cover and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Watch the airflow arrow direction on the old filter before removing it.
  • If leaves or dust are present, wipe the area clean with a dry cloth.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new filter into the slot.
  • Match the airflow arrow on the filter to the direction shown on the old filter or the housing.
  • Make sure the filter seats fully and sits flat.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Use your hands to snap the filter cover back into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and let the side stops re-engage.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens and closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and turn the blower fan on high.
  • Check for normal airflow from the vents.
  • If airflow is still weak, recheck the filter orientation and seating.
  • Replace the cabin air filter every 12,000-15,000 miles or sooner in dusty conditions.
