šŸ”§ Golf - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through the cabin air filter before it enters the interior. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces musty odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves and safety glasses; debris can fall when the cover opens.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic panels—VW interior clips can crack in cold weather.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Shop vacuum with crevice tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
  • Cabin air filter (activated charcoal) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat all the way back for more room.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the filter housing under the glovebox.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the cabin filter access cover

  • Go to the passenger footwell and look up under the glovebox using a flashlight.
  • You’ll see a rectangular filter cover on the HVAC (heater/AC) box.

Step 2: Remove the filter cover

  • If your cover has a screw: remove it with a Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • If your cover uses tabs: gently release the tabs using a plastic trim removal tool. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without scratching.
  • Lower the cover and set it aside.

Step 3: Slide out the old cabin filter

  • Pull the filter straight out of the slot by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level as it comes out to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter frame (this matters for the new one).

Step 4: Clean the filter housing

  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to remove loose debris from inside the housing opening.
  • Tip: Don’t push debris deeper inside.

Step 5: Install the new cabin filter

  • Match the new filter’s airflow arrow to the direction you noted from the old filter.
  • Slide the new filter into the housing by hand until it seats fully and sits flat.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover

  • Reinstall the cover and make sure all tabs are fully engaged by hand.
  • If equipped, install the screw using a Torx T20 screwdriver and Torque to 1.5 Nm (13 in-lbs) (snug, not tight).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm there are no rattles from the cover.
  • If there’s a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes on fresh air to help clear old odors.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
