🔧 Atlas - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps reduce odors, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; the old filter can be dusty/moldy.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—Atlas interior panels can crack if pried aggressively.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool
- Torx T20 driver
- Small flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the passenger front door for working room.
- Slide the passenger seat back to give your hands more space.
- Have a trash bag ready for dusty debris.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the cabin filter area
- Move to the passenger side and open the glove box.
- Use a small flashlight to look along the outer/right side of the glove box for a small damper arm (a little “shock” that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Lower the glove box
- Carefully unclip the glove box damper arm by hand. If needed, use a trim removal tool gently.
- Push the glove box sides inward with your hands to release the stops, then let the glove box swing down.
- Support it so it doesn’t drop hard.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- If your Atlas has screws, remove them with a Torx T20 driver. If it has clips, release them by hand (use the trim removal tool only if necessary).
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep the filter level as you remove it to avoid dumping leaves/dust.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
- Install it in the same direction the old one came out. (The arrow must match the airflow direction shown on the housing.)
- Slide it fully into the slot so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover and press it into place.
- If screws were removed, reinstall them with the Torx T20 driver and tighten snug (do not over-tighten).
- Lift the glove box back up, push the sides inward to pass the stops, and reconnect the damper arm by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Start the Atlas and run the fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no new rattles.
- If there’s a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes—some odor can be from the evaporator, not the filter.
