🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box and removes dust, pollen, and debris from the air entering the cabin. On your RAV4, this is a quick maintenance item that helps airflow and keeps the HVAC system cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Work slowly around the glove box hinge so it does not snap down.
  • Do not use excessive force on plastic tabs or clips.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the HVAC system off.
  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all items.
  • Use your hands to lower the glove box slowly.
  • Keep one hand on the glove box.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) or your fingers to gently squeeze the glove box sides inward.
  • Let the glove box drop down further until the stops clear the opening.
  • Do not force it past its travel limit.

Step 3: Remove the cabin air filter cover

  • Look behind the glove box for the rectangular filter cover.
  • Use your fingers to release the retaining tabs and remove the cover.
  • Set the cover aside safely.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
  • Check the airflow arrow on the old filter so you can match the new one.
  • If the filter is dirty, tap loose debris into a trash bag before removal.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the slot.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the same direction as the original filter.
  • Push it in fully so it seats flat.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Use your fingers to snap the filter cover back into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and gently squeeze the sides inward to clear the stops.
  • Close the glove box normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the fan on and check that airflow is strong and quiet.
  • Make sure the glove box opens and closes normally.
  • If airflow still seems weak, verify the filter orientation.
