š Before You Begin
- Turn the car fully OFF and confirm the instrument cluster is dark.
- Open the passenger door for easy access to the glove box area.
- Tip: Take a photo before removal.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ādamperā arm (a damper is a small strap/arm that slows the glove box as it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- With the glove box open, gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side (do this by hand; use the flashlight to see the clip clearly).
- Tip: Pull straight outwardādonāt twist.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops so it swings down
- Press the glove box side walls inward (left and right) to clear the āstopsā (the stops are the plastic bumps that normally prevent the glove box from dropping).
- While holding the sides in, let the glove box rotate downward toward the floor.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
- Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand (use the flashlight if needed).
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/debris into the blower box.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) for your Prius.
- Slide it in until fully seated and flush.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter housing cover by hand until the tabs click.
- Swing the glove box back up.
- Press the glove box sides inward again so the stops pass back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it onto the pin until it snaps in.
ā After Repair
- Turn the car ON and run the fan at different speeds to confirm normal airflow.
- If you hear a ticking/leaf noise, the filter may not be seatedārecheck the cover and filter position.
- Tip: Replace about every 12 months.
