🔧 Land Cruiser - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air going through your A/C and heater. Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Be gentle with glove box and plastic tabs; they can snap if forced.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Clean nitrile gloves
- Small flashlight

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Land Cruiser on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door and move any items out of the glove box.
- Have a trash bag ready for the old filter.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
- Use a small flashlight to look along the sides of the glove box so you can see the stops and damper.
Step 2: Release the glove box to drop down
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (the little shock-like piece that slows the glove box).
- Carefully unhook the damper from the glove box by hand. If it’s tight, use your clean nitrile gloves for grip.
- Gently push the glove box sides inward (left and right) to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box swing down.
- Push in slowly—don’t bend the glove box hard.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter housing cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter access cover.
- Press the locking tabs and pull the cover straight off.
- Use a small flashlight if the tabs are hard to see.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin filter
- Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
- Note the airflow direction marking (often says “AIR FLOW” with an arrow) on the filter or housing.
Step 5: Install the new cabin filter
- Put on clean nitrile gloves to keep the new filter clean.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one, matching the “AIR FLOW” arrow to the housing’s airflow direction.
- Slide it fully into place so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Snap the cabin filter access cover back on until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops back into position.
- Reconnect the glove box damper on the right side.
- Close the glove box and make sure it opens/closes smoothly.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Land Cruiser and run the blower fan on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
- If you still have a musty smell, the evaporator case may need cleaning (separate service).
