🔧 Avalon - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Avalon’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow, and it can help your A/C perform better.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Avalon on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for easier access and lighting.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- Remove any contents so you can work comfortably.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its peg.
- If it’s tight, use a small trim tool (plastic) to help pry it off gently. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches.)
Step 3: Lower the glove box to access the filter door
- Push in on the glove box sides near the top to clear the stop tabs.
- Lower the glove box downward slowly until it hangs open.
- Tip: Push one side in at a time.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter access cover.
- Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand.
- If needed, use the flashlight for visibility.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out of the housing by hand.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t spill into the blower area.
- Check the filter for an airflow arrow and note the direction.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Insert the new filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the airflow arrow matches the correct direction (it’s usually marked “AIR FLOW” on the filter).
- Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reinstall the filter cover
- Reinstall the rectangular cover and snap the tabs in by hand.
- Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s latched.
Step 8: Raise the glove box and reconnect the damper
- Lift the glove box back up, push the sides in, and let the stop tabs pass back into place.
- Reconnect the right-side damper arm onto its peg by hand.
- Open/close the glove box a couple times to confirm smooth operation.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Avalon and run the fan at different speeds to confirm good airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm normal operation.
- If you hear a new ticking/rubbing sound, recheck that the filter is fully seated and not bent.
