🔧 4Runner - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your 4Runner’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working around the passenger airbag area.
  • ⚠️ Empty the glove box first so nothing falls out.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the passenger door for better access to the glove box.
  • Remove items from the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a small flashlight so you can clearly see the sides and back of the glove box.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • With the glove box open, gently push in on the left and right sides of the glove box (near the top) to clear the “stops.”
  • Keep pushing the sides inward while you let the glove box swing downward.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 3: Unhook the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side, you’ll see a small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box). The damper is the piece that prevents the glove box from dropping fast.
  • Use your fingers (and a small flashlight to see it) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box opening, locate the rectangular cabin filter access door.
  • Pinch the tabs on the cover and pull it straight off by hand.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level as you pull it out so leaves and dust don’t spill into the blower housing.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow direction marking on the filter (usually an arrow that says “AIR FLOW”).
  • Install the filter in the same direction as the old one came out (airflow arrow typically points downward on your 4Runner).
  • Make sure it slides in flat and fully seated (not folded or bowed).

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by pushing it on until both tabs click.
  • Reattach the glove box damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops go past the dash opening, then let it close normally.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your 4Runner and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation and confirm airflow feels normal.
  • If you hear a new ticking/rubbing noise, the filter may be mis-seated—recheck that it’s flat.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$135 by doing it yourself!
