šŸ”§ Pathfinder - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Pathfinder’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the A/C and heater. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen and can improve airflow if the vents feel weak or musty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Keep hands clear of the glove box hinges while lowering it.
  • āš ļø Do not force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Pathfinder on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Turn the HVAC system OFF before removing the filter.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a small slow-close link).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Carefully pop the damper arm off its peg using a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool).
  • Tip: Pry gently at the socket, not the arm.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower it

  • With the glove box open, press in on both glove box side walls by hand to clear the ā€œstopsā€ (the tabs that prevent it from dropping).
  • Lower the glove box down slowly toward the floor.
  • If your Pathfinder has a small trim/cover panel interfering, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2 if screws are present.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the cabin filter housing door (rectangular cover).
  • Unclip the door by hand; if the clip is tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to help release it.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out by hand (use nitrile gloves).
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame (this matters for installation).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Insert the new filter into the slot the same way the old one came out.
  • Match the airflow arrow on the filter to the airflow direction indicated on the housing (if marked). If the housing is not marked, install it in the same orientation as the original.
  • Tip: If it won’t slide easily, don’t force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter door and press until it clicks into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the side walls in again to get the stops past the dash opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by snapping it back onto its peg by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Pathfinder and run the blower on medium, then high, to confirm normal airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to verify there are no rattles behind the glove box.
  • If there’s a new whistle noise, the filter may be slightly mis-seated—recheck that it’s fully slid in and the door is clipped tight.
