🔧 Altima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces dust/pollen, and can fix musty odors or weak blower performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic clips—Altima interior panels can crack if pried hard.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Altima on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little support strap that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Release the glove box damper (right side)

  • If equipped with a clip-style damper, gently pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If your damper has a small screw, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then unhook the damper.
  • Go slow—this plastic can snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box (near the top) with your hands to clear the stops.
  • Let the glove box rotate downward to hang open, giving access behind it.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the cabin filter access door (a small rectangular cover).

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Press the tabs on the access door and pull it off by hand.
  • If the tab is tight, gently help it with a plastic trim removal tool—don’t pry hard.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand (it may slide out horizontally).
  • Wear nitrile gloves if it’s dusty.
  • Use a flashlight to check the filter slot for leaves/debris and remove anything you can reach by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (the airflow arrow must point the correct way for your Altima’s housing).
  • Slide it fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter access door by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in to pass the stops again.
  • Reconnect the damper on the right side; if it used a screw, install it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only—no overtightening).

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Altima and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure nothing rattles behind the glove box.
  • If you still smell musty odor, the A/C evaporator case may need cleaning.
