🔧 Altima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces dust/pollen, and can fix musty odors or weak blower performance.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic clips—Altima interior panels can crack if pried hard.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Flashlight
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back for more room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little support strap that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Release the glove box damper (right side)
- If equipped with a clip-style damper, gently pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool.
- If your damper has a small screw, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then unhook the damper.
- Go slow—this plastic can snap.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push in on both sides of the glove box (near the top) with your hands to clear the stops.
- Let the glove box rotate downward to hang open, giving access behind it.
- Use a flashlight to locate the cabin filter access door (a small rectangular cover).
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Press the tabs on the access door and pull it off by hand.
- If the tab is tight, gently help it with a plastic trim removal tool—don’t pry hard.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand (it may slide out horizontally).
- Wear nitrile gloves if it’s dusty.
- Use a flashlight to check the filter slot for leaves/debris and remove anything you can reach by hand.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (the airflow arrow must point the correct way for your Altima’s housing).
- Slide it fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter access door by hand until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in to pass the stops again.
- Reconnect the damper on the right side; if it used a screw, install it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only—no overtightening).
âś… After Repair
- Start your Altima and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure nothing rattles behind the glove box.
- If you still smell musty odor, the A/C evaporator case may need cleaning.
