🔧 Mazda3 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Mazda3’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps reduce odors, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap in cold weather.
- ⚠️ Keep the glove box supported so it doesn’t drop suddenly.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Mazda3 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for easier access to the glove box.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove all items.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little support arm that slows the glove box when it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side.
- Tip: Pry gently at the clip, not the arm.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With both hands, push the glove box sides inward to clear the stop tabs.
- Let the glove box rotate downward slowly until you can see the HVAC filter access area behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Use your flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to help press the tab.
- Remove the cover and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (airflow arrow should match the housing’s airflow direction).
- Slide the filter in evenly so it doesn’t fold or crush.
Step 7: Reinstall cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stop tabs back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin (you should feel it snap on).
âś… After Repair
- Start your Mazda3 and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between A/C and heat to make sure nothing is rattling behind the glove box.
- If you hear a buzz or whistle, recheck that the filter isn’t installed backward or bent.
