🔧 Sorento - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Sorento’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow from the vents.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before working around the glove box area.
- ⚠️ Don’t force glove box parts—plastic tabs can snap if over-bent.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
- Plastic trim tool (specialty)

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Sorento on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself space.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove any contents.
- Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little strut that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim tool (specialty).
- A “damper arm” is a small link that makes the glove box open slowly.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops so it drops down
- Push inward on both sides of the glove box (near the top) to clear the built-in stops.
- Let the glove box swing downward on its hinges so you can access the filter housing behind it.
- Push evenly—don’t twist the glove box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Press the tabs on the cover and pull it straight off (use the plastic trim tool (specialty) if the tabs are tight).
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level as you pull it out to avoid dumping debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (airflow direction for your Sorento’s cabin filter housing).
- Slide the filter in until it sits fully and evenly in the tray.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by aligning it and pressing until both tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto the pin (you can guide it with the plastic trim tool (specialty) if needed).
âś… After Repair
- Start your Sorento and run the fan at medium speed to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure the glove box area doesn’t rattle.
- If you hear a tapping noise, re-check that the filter is fully seated and the cover is clipped in evenly.
