🔧 Optima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Optima’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty odors, and keeps dust/pollen down inside the car.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the car fully OFF and confirm the READY light is off before working behind the glove box.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

- Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin (or keep it away from the dash).
- Open the front passenger door for easier access and lighting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Open the glove box all the way.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (a small strut that slows the glove box). Damper = the slow-drop arm.
- Use a trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its pin (or pop it free by hand if it’s loose enough).
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
- Lower the glove box fully to expose the cabin filter housing behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter housing cover
- Find the rectangular cover on the HVAC case (directly behind the glove box).
- Release the cover tabs by hand; if a screw is present on your cover, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
Step 5: Replace the cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Note the airflow arrow on the old filter frame.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (match the airflow arrow). Wrong direction can reduce airflow.
Step 6: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter housing cover until the tabs click (or reinstall the screw with a Phillips screwdriver if equipped).
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again to re-seat the side stops.
- Reconnect the damper arm onto its pin (press it on by hand).
- Close the glove box.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the car ON and run the fan at different speeds to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
- If you had a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes and confirm the odor is improved.
