🔧 Optima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Optima’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty odors, and keeps dust/pollen down inside the car.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Turn the car fully OFF and confirm the READY light is off before working behind the glove box.
  • 🔸 Keep fingers clear of the glove box hinge area when lowering it.
  • 🔸 No battery disconnect is required for this cabin filter replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin (or keep it away from the dash).
  • Open the front passenger door for easier access and lighting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Open the glove box all the way.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (a small strut that slows the glove box). Damper = the slow-drop arm.
  • Use a trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its pin (or pop it free by hand if it’s loose enough).

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
  • Lower the glove box fully to expose the cabin filter housing behind it.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter housing cover

  • Find the rectangular cover on the HVAC case (directly behind the glove box).
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if a screw is present on your cover, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Replace the cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the old filter frame.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (match the airflow arrow). Wrong direction can reduce airflow.

Step 6: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the filter housing cover until the tabs click (or reinstall the screw with a Phillips screwdriver if equipped).
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again to re-seat the side stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm onto its pin (press it on by hand).
  • Close the glove box.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the car ON and run the fan at different speeds to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
  • If you had a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes and confirm the odor is improved.
