🔧 Elantra - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Elantra’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it restores airflow, reduces odors, and helps the blower motor work less.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the glove box.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—use gentle pressure to avoid breaking them.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Clean nitrile gloves
- Flashlight

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove any items inside.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little strap that slows the glove box). Damper = slow-drop strap.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- Use your hands (wear clean nitrile gloves) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the glove box.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently—do not pry hard.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops” (the bumps that keep it from falling).
- Lower the glove box down slowly until it hangs open, giving access behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing cover.
- Use your hands to press the locking tabs and pull the cover straight off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Use the flashlight to note the airflow direction arrow on the filter (or on the housing).
- Tip: Keep it level to avoid spilling debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Slide the new filter into the slot in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the airflow arrow matches the housing direction (typically “DOWN” in the Elantra).
- Do not crush or fold the filter—push it in evenly.
Step 7: Reinstall the housing cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up, press the sides inward again, and guide the stops back past the opening.
- Reconnect the glove box damper arm onto its pin by pushing it on until it snaps in place.
- Torque to N/A (hand-secure plastic clips; no torque spec)
âś… After Repair
- Start your Elantra and run the fan at speeds 1–4 to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure the glove box area has no rattles.
- If there’s a new noise, recheck that the filter cover is fully clipped in.
