How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter on a 2018 Honda CR-V
Step-by-step DIY cabin filter change with tools, parts list, safety tips, and money-saving advice

🔧 CR-V - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter in your CR-V cleans the air that comes through the vents. Replacing it keeps dust, pollen, and smells under control and helps the blower motor work easier.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- 🛑 Do not force plastic parts; they can crack in hot or cold weather.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear when releasing the glove box so it doesn’t drop suddenly.

📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 📍 Turn off the A/C system and ignition; remove the key or turn off the start button.
- 📍 Empty everything from the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
- 📍 A trim removal tool is a plastic prying tool used to gently move clips without scratching or breaking plastic.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- 🪛 Open the passenger-side glove box fully.
- 🪛 Remove any items inside so you can see the sides and back clearly.
- 🪛 Use the flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small damper arm (a little plastic “arm” that slows the glove box when it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- 🪛 With the glove box open, gently push the damper arm toward the front of the car while lifting it off its pin by hand. No tools required here.
- 🪛 If it feels stuck, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the damper clip off the pin.
- 🪛 Let the damper arm hang freely; do not pull on the cable.
Step 3: Release the glove box side stops
- 🪛 On each side of the glove box, gently push the side of the glove box inward with your hands to clear the stops from the dashboard opening.
- 🪛 Once both sides are pushed in, the glove box will swing down further and hang almost vertical.
- 🪛 Support it with one hand so it doesn’t drop suddenly. Use two hands to control it
Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover
- 🪛 Behind the lowered glove box, use the flashlight to find a rectangular black plastic door; this is the cabin filter cover.
- 🪛 You will see small tabs on each side of the cover.
Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter cover
- 🪛 Squeeze the left and right tabs of the cover inward with your fingers.
- 🪛 Pull the cover straight toward you to remove it; set it aside.
- 🪛 If the tabs are stiff, gently help them with the trim removal tool (plastic), but do not twist hard.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- 🪛 Grab the front edge of the old filter and slide it straight out.
- 🪛 Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter (usually pointing down in the CR-V). Match this arrow later
- 🪛 Use the clean shop towel to gently wipe any loose leaves or dust from the filter housing.
Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter
- 🪛 Take the new filter and find the airflow direction arrow printed on the side.
- 🪛 For the 2018 CR-V, the arrow should point down when installed (air flows from top to bottom through the filter).
- 🪛 Slide the new filter straight into the housing, keeping it level so it doesn’t crumple.
- 🪛 Make sure it sits fully inside and is not bent or twisted. If it snags, pull out and re-align
Step 8: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- 🪛 Position the cover in front of the opening and align the edges.
- 🪛 Push it straight in until both side tabs click into place.
- 🪛 Tug gently to confirm the cover is locked; it should not come off easily.
Step 9: Reattach the glove box and damper arm
- 🪛 Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- 🪛 Push in on both sides of the glove box again so the side stops go back behind the dash opening, then let it rest in the normal open position.
- 🪛 Reattach the damper arm on the right side by lining it up with the pin and pushing it on by hand until it clicks.
Step 10: Final check and clean-up
- 🪛 Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly and the damper slows it gently.
- 🪛 Put your items back into the glove box.
- 🪛 Wipe any dust from the area with the clean shop towel.
- 🪛 No torque specs are needed for this job; no bolts are removed.
✅ After Repair
- ✔️ Start the engine and turn on the A/C or fan.
- ✔️ Check that air is blowing well from the vents at all speeds.
- ✔️ Switch between fresh air and recirculation modes and confirm airflow feels normal.
- ✔️ If there is a musty smell, it may improve over a few days as fresh air passes through the new filter.
