šŸ”§ Expedition - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Expedition’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the glove box hinges and damper arm while lowering it.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the HVAC system OFF before removing the filter.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a small slowing strap/arm that controls how fast the glove box drops).

Step 2: Release the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • If you see a small arm/strap on the right side, gently pop it off the glove box pin using a trim clip removal tool.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Press the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box rotate downward.
  • If your Expedition has any small screws/retainers in the glove box area, remove them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, gently assist with the trim clip removal tool.
  • Remove the cover and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to note the airflow direction arrow on the filter (this matters for the new one).
  • Keep it level to avoid spilling debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and install the new filter by hand.
  • Match the airflow arrow direction to the way the old one came out (arrow should follow airflow direction through the housing).
  • Make sure the filter seats fully and isn’t folded or pinched.

Step 7: Reinstall cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter access door by hand until the tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and re-engage the side stops by gently pressing the sides inward.
  • Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
  • If you removed screws, reinstall them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds.
  • Check for normal airflow and listen for any rubbing noises (a sign the filter isn’t seated).
  • If there’s a musty smell, run fresh air (not recirculation) for a few minutes.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹2,000-₹5,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹900-₹2,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹1,100-₹2,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹2,000-₹4,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
