š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the HVAC system OFF before removing the filter.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove contents by hand.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ādamperā arm (a small slowing strap/arm that controls how fast the glove box drops).
Step 2: Release the glove box damper (if equipped)
- If you see a small arm/strap on the right side, gently pop it off the glove box pin using a trim clip removal tool.
- Go slowāplastic tabs can snap.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box rotate downward.
- If your Expedition has any small screws/retainers in the glove box area, remove them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, gently assist with the trim clip removal tool.
- Remove the cover and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to note the airflow direction arrow on the filter (this matters for the new one).
- Keep it level to avoid spilling debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Put on nitrile gloves and install the new filter by hand.
- Match the airflow arrow direction to the way the old one came out (arrow should follow airflow direction through the housing).
- Make sure the filter seats fully and isnāt folded or pinched.
Step 7: Reinstall cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter access door by hand until the tabs click in.
- Lift the glove box back up and re-engage the side stops by gently pressing the sides inward.
- Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
- If you removed screws, reinstall them using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Check for normal airflow and listen for any rubbing noises (a sign the filter isnāt seated).
- If thereās a musty smell, run fresh air (not recirculation) for a few minutes.
