šŸ”§ Durango - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Durango’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Be gentle with plastic tabs—cold plastic breaks easier.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool (non-marring)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Tip: Empty the glove box first.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove anything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box area for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a little strap that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Lower the glove box

  • If your Durango has a damper arm, gently pop it off its peg by hand or with a plastic trim tool (non-marring).
  • Push inward on both sides of the glove box (by hand) to clear the side stops, then let the glove box swing downward.
  • Tip: Push one side at a time if tight.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the locking tabs by hand (or gently with a plastic trim tool (non-marring)) and remove the cover.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Use the flashlight to note the airflow arrow direction printed on the old filter frame.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one (match the airflow arrow direction).
  • Make sure it slides in evenly and seats fully (no bending or bunching).
  • Wear nitrile gloves if you have allergies or the old filter is dusty.

Step 6: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops and close normally.
  • Reattach the glove box damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its peg by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan at all speeds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between A/C and heat to confirm normal operation.
  • Tip: Musty smell may fade after a few drives.
