đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Suburban on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn HVAC OFF (fan off) so debris doesn’t blow around when the filter is removed.
- Move the passenger seat back for working space.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Open the glove box fully.
Step 2: Release the glove box travel stop
- On the right side, unhook the small glove box damper arm (the little slow-down strap) using a plastic trim removal tool.
- Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push in on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops (you’re flexing the glove box inward).
- Let the glove box rotate downward toward the floor.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- If your cover uses screws, remove them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- If your cover uses tabs, release the tabs by hand (use the plastic trim removal tool if needed).
- Pull the cover off and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out of the housing.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the filter box and remove any loose debris by hand (with nitrile gloves).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Match the airflow direction: look for an airflow arrow printed on the filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction the old one came out (typically airflow is toward the rear of the vehicle, into the blower).
- Slide the new filter in until fully seated—don’t force it.
Step 7: Reinstall the access cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover.
- If equipped with screws, tighten them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug only; no published torque is typically specified for this cover).
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side using the plastic trim removal tool if needed.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Suburban and run the fan at medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is strong and there are no rattles behind the glove box.
- If there’s a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes to clear residual dust.
