🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box and traps dust, pollen, and debris before air enters the cabin. Replacing it restores airflow and helps keep the HVAC system smelling clean and working properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before working around the glove box area.
  • Open the glove box slowly so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Be careful with the glove box damper arm and side stops so they do not snap.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.
  • Have the new filter ready before opening the glove box area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
  • Take your time so the box does not swing down hard.

Step 2: Remove the glove box damper

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently pop the glove box damper arm off its pin, if needed.
  • This damper is the little soft-stop arm on the side of the glove box.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box by hand to clear the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing down carefully.
  • Support the door so it does not stress the hinges.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Use your hands to unclip the cabin air filter cover behind the glove box.
  • Pull the cover straight out once the clips release.

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter out by hand.
  • Keep the filter level so dirt does not spill out.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Use your hands to insert the new cabin air filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Match the airflow arrow on the filter to the direction marked on the housing.
  • Arrow usually points down on this style.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Use your hands to snap the filter cover back into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the side stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm if it was removed.

Step 8: Check operation

  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens and closes normally.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the blower on high to confirm airflow is strong.

✅ After Repair

  • Listen for any rattles from the glove box area.
  • Make sure the glove box damper and side stops are fully clipped in.
  • If airflow is still weak, the filter may be installed backward or the blower intake may be clogged.
